Origin of Vastu Purusha Mandala - Basis of Vastu Architecture

This blog is not meant to be a reiteration of Vastu Purush story from the Puranas (Matsya Purana or Hindu religious philosophy). In Brihath Samhitha (Brihad Samhita - one of the traditional Vastu Shastra scriptures), the story is explained similar to what is mentioned in Puranas. This is the story in a nut shell, though you may find different versions based on regional cultures and manuscripts. During Lord Shiva's fight with Andhaka (an asura), Shiva's sweat fell on the ground. From the sweat drops, a giant demon was born. Due to his hunger, the demon started eating everything that came across his sight. When his hunger became an annoyance and potential danger, the Devas complained to Lord Brahma about his behavior. Lord Brahma advised the Devas to keep him grounded by sitting on his body at various parts.  45 Devas (deities or Gods) pushed him against the ground and didn't allow him to get up and cause any further problems. This demon became known as Vastu Purush (Vastu Purusha). The 45 deities or powers represent the positive power required at different times of the day and night on earth.  Lord Brahma made VastuPurush the owner of all poojas and functionalities in the house and  made him the person responsible for ensuring the prosperity and health of residents of the house.

Vastu Purush Mandala and Positive Energies - USA

As explained  above, a properly designed house in Ekashaala (or single unit) architecture should follow the Vastu Purusha Mandala guidelines. This means that the house should be in a rectangle or square shape and no important parts of a human body should be missing in the house as per above diagram. If there is a North East cut in the house for foundation or roofline, it means that the head portion of Vastu Purush is missing, which has its own implications to residents in the house. If there is a South West cut or missing portion of the house, the feet is missing and there are associated effects as well. Similarly, for the right arm, left arm etc. and all other parts.

Vastu Shastra - Importance of BrahmaSthaan or BrahmaStan 

One of the key principles in Vastu Shastra regarding Vastu Purusha Mandala concept is the placement of BrahmaSthaan or BrahmaStan . It is the absolute center space of the building if you draw diagonal lines on a square shaped building. It will extend to 3x3 or 9 squares if you are applying the 9x9 Pada Vinyaasa.

Ideally the Brahma Sthaan of the house should be empty or devoid of any stairs, bathrooms, walls, drainage etc.. In reality, I am yet to see a house in USA where the center of the house is open for one-ninth total area of the floor plan.   An easy way to think of this is the traditional courtyards in South Indian homes or Indian palaces. You can also visualize something loosely related to how a typical Embassy Suites hotel will look like for a house. This is a sheer wastage of space for designing a house in USA and hence the BrahmaStaan space is practically limited to a smaller space in the house.

Most of the house designs in USA will have a staircase or powder room or storage area in the center area sometime sin absolute center of the house. These are not ideal and need to be evaluated on a  case-by-case basis based on the actual floor plan and measurements. If you are building a house or remodeling one, there will be a higher chance of at least leaving the exact center point as empty and moving the structures from that area. In some extreme cases, I had clients who capped toilets and drainages in center area of the home, as there was no other viable option.
