# 2 - Vastu Measurements for Houses, Buildings - USA

In the previous section, we reviewed the importance of directions and how to follow them when you buy a house or build a home or office.

In this section, we will review the importance of measurements and ratios in Vastu Shastra.

Vasthu Shastra, an engineering field on its entirety, has certain set of rules for buildings. The fundamentals originate on "SthapatyaVeda" written several centuries ago, as a supplement of "AtharvaVeda". Some of the later works on VastuVidya include "SamaranganSutradhara", "Mayamata", and "Manasaara". The latter 2 text books are standard reference books for Vastu Shastra. "ManushyaalayaChandrika" is another work popular among artisans and sthapathis in India.

Regardless of the several reference works on Vastu Shastra, the principles agree on measurements of buildings based on direction. This is very complex to be explained over a few web pages and hence not within the scope to be described here. Just understand the fact that based on directions and total built-up ground area, buildings have certain ratios for length to width, height, perimeter etc. that are next to impossible to be followed by builder provided plans.  There are certain ratios and perimeters that should be avoided at all costs, based on the direction and shape of the building.

The building design for homes /houses are most likely to follow the “Vastu Purusha Mandala (Parama Saayika Mandala or Nava Varga 9x9) Nava Paada Scale”, which will be explained later in this series. As explained above, the Vastu dimensions or measurements have to follow one of the 3 allowable ratios and avoid one ratio for length to width, to allow certain perimeters based on the direction or facing of the building. While perimeter measurements will be difficult to follow, the ratio of length to width and shapes of buildings can be maintained with proper Vastu consultation and planning.
